The starfish Championship map makes its appearance for the second season in a row, with each leader having garnered a top two finish in the playoffs and being duly rewarded with this extremely lush and rich, if somewhat controversial, map."
"Indeed, Bob, there has been much debate over these Championship maps in general. Personally, I think their mirrored nature and high quality is a great spectacle worthy of a title game and a just reward for all these leader's exhaustive efforts to make it to the big one."
"Yeah, I don't know about that Joe. Mirrored maps can introduce unexpected imbalances, and the size and lushness of this one in particular exacerbates those issues."
"It cannot be denied, however, that much great care was taken to patch over some of these issues. The capitals, for example, are surprisingly balanced for all combinations of starting techs. For example, with the dreaded Hunting/Mysticism combo there is still a Deer tile in each capital for good growth potential."
"I can certainly say that last season's Championship may have skewed the map perception. While this is still a more builder-oriented field, it is not as extreme as last year, where even the sole low peaceweight Qin was a builder through and through, not to mention having Mansa, Gandhi, and Lizzy. This one is a rather interesting mix of leaders, with less extreme peaceweights and more willingness to bash some skulls here and there."
"Agreed, and I think this is a surprisingly balanced and open-ended setup, where every leader here has a chance. Noteworthy CFCNN pundit Saxo Grammaticus categorized these leaders into "snowball" and "bloat" leaders, with the "snowball" leaders - Ramesses, Louis, Gandhi - in the Western tentacles likely leveraging an early economic shrine, widely believed to be the strongest economic engine in the starfish map, into an unstoppable tech lead, and the "bloat" leaders in the Eastern tentacles - Zara, Victoria, Joao - aiming for the crown through expansion and sheer quantity."
"Couldn't agree more with that, Bob. With the leaders, we'll start North and go clockwise from there. Directly North is... the Pharaoh RAMESSES OF EGYPT, who is beginning to establish himself as one of the best pure culturemongers in AI Survivor. While he had skated on some VERY thin ice to qualify for this game, often teetering on the edge of military disaster with some brazen cultural gambits, he ultimately ended up going uncalled and has ultimately dispelled any notion that he is a playoff choker; his Season 8 playoff embarrassment feels like an afterthought now. He has yet to convert the general audience to his cause, but the inner circles of AI Survivor have been singing his praises for quite a while. One huge advantage the Pharaoh has is the power of Industrious Stonehenge, which grants him a free Obelisk in every city which can lead to an ultra quick shrine, giving him most of the momentum for spreading his religion. Fret not about Egypt's World Cup exit, for being Ramesses feels like having AI Survivor's version of Messi on your team!"
"Yes, Ramesses looks absolutely formidable here. To his East is... ZARA YAQOB OF ETHIOPIA, making his first Championship Game appearance since his SEASON ONE SILVER MEDAL! After yet another embarrassing Season 7 exit that led to the dismissal of the mercurial Haile Sellasie as Head Coach, Ethiopia has been on the rise under the steady leadership of Ezana. We have some nice East Africa representation here, but Zara took quite a different path than Ramesses here, making the big game off of two excellent performances that happened to get overshadowed by another leader's brilliance. While Zara is a fanatic, his path to glory here seems to be predicated on expansion and size, as he does not have good starting techs or tech preferences for an early religion - Discord analyst aetryn identified him as the leader least likely to get one of the first three religions. Can a leader known for being good, not great, finally reach true greatness?"
"Next is VICTORIA OF ENGLAND, affectionately and derisively known as the Chungus. Vicky has been a fan favorite this season, having made it to the Championship Game off of two shocking upsets in games she had been totally written off of. Especially noteworthy was her playoff game, where despite being a centrally located high peaceweight leader, she absolutely shocked everyone with a Turn 270 TRIPLE KILL Domination victory, one of the most brutal games ever witnessed in AI Survivor history. Of course, Alternate Histories ended up showing that game to be a total fluke, and don't let recency bias fool you; every single one of Vicky's successes have been proven somewhat questionable when put under further scrutiny, and there have been calls to investigate England for doping. Nevertheless, her starting techs and traits look like an excellent combination for this map and this has to be a good setup for Lizzy to pass over her crown to her fellow English queen. The sun never sets, after all!"
"After Vicky is... JOAO, also known as J-Man, the Patron Saint of Mediocrities, Joao Joao, Sir Fingernail, and, after his Opening Round, Sparky Sparky Boom Man. Joao's tale this season is much like Zara's, having played two winning caliber performances, only to come up short to another leader's brilliance. Particularly tragic was his opener, where he watched as his Spaceship blew up while Vicky had leveraged the Financial/Alive cheat code to catch up and come up victorious. Gotta say though, this is a fantastic map for his traits. Can Joao take advantage of extremely favorable diplomacy to pull off a shocker?"
"Following Joao is the sole leader from last season's Championship, perhaps the most polarizing leader in Civ4... MAHATMA GANDHI! In his free time, Gandhi is our loyal cameraman, but in AI Survivor, Gandhi is perhaps the biggest culturephile in the game, and, much like Ramesses, he won through two uncalled cultural gambits and should be a favorite due to his propensity towards an early religion."
"You know, Gandhi is why we have advanced security for this game, as one wrong move and you would have a massive riot between his supporters and haters. He's lucky that the last leader in the field exists to draw some attention, as his diplomatic situation is tenuous. Rounding out the field is... THE SUN KING, Louis XIV of France, and the sole hope for a multi-champion in AI Survivor. The Season 7 champion had pulled a cultural win out of thin air in his opener, but he is only here as he was lucky enough to be the only leader not steamrolled by a very angry Chungus in his playoff game. The similarities to Qin are uncanny: backdooring off of an English leader's snowball, the sole low peaceweight, and a strategy more oriented towards building, even if he's a lot more aggressive. Can this guy pull off an upset from a sketchy diplomatic position?"

"Thanks, Bob. Due to recency and Financial bias, Vicky is a strong picking contest favorite to take home the title, taking home nearly half of the vote. The only other leaders with any sort of relevant support are Gandhi and Ramesses. As is often the case in these mirrored map setups, 2nd place looks like a total tossup, while Louis and Gandhi unsurprisingly have most of the share of the First To Die vote. Fantasy wise, while ABC170, or he who possesses one thousand nicknames, had cemented his victory after the third playoff game, there is a neck-and-neck race for second place between Lobster667 and Vincarius, who carry Vicky and Joao in the Championship respectively. Lobster currently has a one point lead for the Fantasy Silver Medal."

"Looks like Gandhi is the only leader pursuing religion out the gate, with the other five putting more emphasis on the food techs they'll need. It's a lot, actually, Hunting, Fishing, Agriculture, and Animal Husbandry are pretty essential for these starts."

Sources are already declaring that Ramesses has won, and it is not difficult to see why, as he has gotten a best case scenario opening while his competition has looked extremely sluggish to start. Victoria, the community favorite, has been particularly disappointing, as she has not been leveraging her Imperialistic trait to the full extent she needs to. While Louis has been a lot better from an expansion point, it doesn't look like enough to overcome his sketchy diplomatic position. Meanwhile, Zara Yaqob just looks happy to be in this game. At least they are not Gandhi and Joao, who evidently are having the worst openings, Joao from an economic standpoint and Gandhi from a development one. Joao's 21 turn Iron Working research has indeed ruined his game, while Gandhi has had difficulty connecting his food resources, expanding, and even teching, and his diplomatic situation is extremely precarious. The crowd, mostly anti-Gandhi, is loving this."

"In other news, Vicky is playing with serious fire, sending out her settler to the unknown with just a Warrior as an escort. Those are some high quality cities, especially longterm, but oof, despite it being so early I'm having a hard time imagining anyone other than Egypt winning. The English have also avoided Mysticism, affecting their city quality."

Vicky has been recovering nicely from her slow start, and the Great Lighthouse will certainly bring her back into the game. Don't count out Louis either, he currently has the score lead by a good margin, higher than even Ramesses, and the Great Lighthouse would be instrumental in giving us our first ever repeat champion."
"Not so sure about that, Louis actually only has one coastal city outside his capital. In fact, I would say the Great Lighthouse overall is pretty overvalued on this map, I think, for example, getting to Monarchy for Hereditary Rule is a lot more impactful. And look, the Egyptians get the Great Lighthouse."

"Louis not helping his case at all, completely avoiding Catapults and doing nothing save for dutifully softening up Indian cities for Egyptian troops to just walk into. Particularly tragic is Varanasi, which Louis captured TWICE, only for the Indians to recapture their city both times. Ultimately, Ramesses secures Varanasi, and Louis is effectively locked out of the territory he had torpedoed his own game to take. He's finally teching Construction, but it's too little, too late."

For now, Canterbury has fallen to the Ethiopians, and Zara certainly is the leading favorite for his second ever silver medal, but Vicky has Longbows, Statue of Zeus, and Chichen Itza. "It's a bummer the rest of Maniamuse's Fantasy team ended up busting, as Ramesses was an incredible pickup for him. ABC170 of course extends his already uncatchable lead, you know, he has gotten a lot of First To Die value in the playoffs, three of his four playoff guys eventually getting that distinction. They don't even have any real cultural cities, and the one way we might see a different champion is if Ramesses makes the ill-advised move to put up the culture slider."

"You know, in a celebratory gesture, Joao attacked Vicky on the last interturn of the game. I have to hand it to him, that was an impressive comeback from irrelevancy, and a well deserved 2nd place for a leader who has cemented a King of 2nd Place title for this season at least."

He could have attacked Vicky and secured the Runner Up trophy at any time, but instead he needed Vicky to do her best to hand it to him when it was too little, too late. Zara's entire career has been waiting for others to take action for him, and he gets burned once again as a result."
